In the past, visiting Wat Phra That Doi Suthep was extremely difficult. There were no roads like today; the path was narrow, uneven, and traversed dense forests, taking more than five hours. It was said that "without merit and unwavering faith," one would never have the opportunity to worship at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.
In 1917, Prince Boworadet, the Viceroy of the Phayap Region, commissioned engineers to survey the construction of a road up Doi Suthep. The estimate was that it would cost 200,000 baht and take three years to complete. The government lacked the funds, so construction was suspended. Later, Luang Sri Prakat and Chao Kaeo Nawarat, the rulers of Chiang Mai, requested Kruba Sriwichai to meditate and offer prayers for the road's completion. Kruba Sriwichai instructed them to return the following day for an answer. Upon their arrival, the two gentlemen received the answer: "The road up Doi Suthep will be completed within six months." He also spoke in riddles, saying, "Friday ascend the mountain, Saturday descend to the valley," implying that the ceremony could begin. Luang Sri Prakat immediately went to consult his wife, Khun Nai Rueankaew, who readily agreed and even volunteered to be the cook. Luang Sri Prakat then used his personal funds to print 50,000 leaflets about the construction of the road up Doi Suthep, and Chao Kaeo Nawarat printed an additional 50,000 copies, which were distributed to the public throughout Northern Thailand.
Kruba Sriwichai chose November 9, 1934, as the auspicious date, assigning Kruba Thaim, the abbot of Wat Saen Fang, to perform the invocation of the Four Guardian Deities at 1:00 AM. At 10:00 AM, Phraya Phaholpolpayuhasena, the first Prime Minister of Thailand, invited Kruba Sriwichai from Wat Phra Singh to the ceremony area. When Kruba Sriwichai's procession arrived at the foot of Doi Suthep (near Wat Sri Soda), the first groundbreaking ceremony for the road construction began. Phraya Phaholpolpayuhasena performed the first groundbreaking ceremony, followed by Kruba Sriwichai pulling the earth. Then, Chao Kaeo Nawarat, the ruler of Chiang Mai, participated. The first person to strike the shovel was Luang Sri Prakat, followed by Khun Nai Ruean Kaeo, northern nobility, merchants, and wealthy individuals, all joining in the road construction effort.
Kruba Sriwichai announced to those present that day, “This road construction is a monumental undertaking. It will only be completed with the help of the angels. Therefore, have confidence and cooperate wholeheartedly; success is certain.” However, Luang Sri Prakat remained worried, fearing failure due to the limited number of people available that day. Seeing Luang Sri Prakat’s anxiety, Kruba Sriwichai reassured him, “Don’t worry, Luang. In seven days, more people will come, so many that there won’t be enough room to dig.” Seven days later, after one hundred thousand copies of the leaflet had been distributed, people from many districts and provinces in northern Lanna, from various social classes and ethnicities, flocked to Wat Sri Soda. Some brought their children and grandchildren, others carried supplies and food, and some brought shovels and pickaxes. From ten to a hundred, from a hundred to a thousand, and from a thousand to ten thousand. The area was incredibly crowded.
It's truly amazing that the construction of this 11-kilometer and 530-meter-long road on the mountain took only 5 months and 22 days, with the only tools available being shovels and pickaxes. When newly completed, the road was named Doi Suthep Road. Later, it was renamed Sri Wichai Road in honor of Kruba Sri Wichai, the saint of Lanna Thai.
On this road of faith, there are two great and enduring traditions:
1.The pilgrimage up Doi Suthep the night before Visakha Puja Day.
2.The CMU TREKKING (a freshman orientation event for Chiang Mai Uniersity students).
3.The Chiang Mai 22K or Chiang Mai 22K Night Run, a race promoting tourism in Chiang Mai, is an uphill and downhill run organized by JOG&JOY, descendants of the Luang Sri Prakat and Khun Nai Rueankaew families. This event, now in its 10th year, is illuminated along the entire 11 km stretch of Sri Wichai Road.
Objectives of the event:
1. To stimulate the economy and tourism in Chiang Mai during the rainy season (Amazing Chiang Mai Green Season).
2. To support and promote the 730th anniversary of Chiang Mai, the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, towards becoming a World Heritage Site in 2026 (Nopburi Sri Nakhon Ping Chiang Mai).
3. To encourage Thai people to exercise for their health through walking and running.

This is a prestigious international running event. The judges' decision is final. Runners who lack sportsmanship, such as those who cheat on age, change participants, take shortcuts, or cut across designated routes, are strictly prohibited from competing. Participants must be the correct age for their registered age group (2026 minus their year of birth) and must present a valid passport or national ID card with their date of birth and photograph before receiving awards. Runners must pass all checkpoints and display their assigned symbol. Runners must wear their bib number prominently displayed on the front of their body. The organizing committee reserves the right to withhold awards if timing chips fail to read, the bib number is folded, another participant uses a different bib number, the bib number is incorrectly assigned to the wrong name or age group, or any other reason that prevents verification of the participant's category/age group. To prevent bib and timing chip swapping, there are 10 CCTV cameras along the uphill and downhill running route.
